Summary | Lawyer and jurist; chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. Chiefly correspondence, 1849-1910, between Fuller and members of his family, friends, and professional associates. Also includes printed matter, notes, scrapbooks, speeches and writings, and memorabilia. The papers relate to personal and family affairs; Fuller's student life at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine; his activities in Chicago, including his law practice, Democratic politics, and his real estate holdings; his term on the Supreme Court; and his work on behalf of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, negotiations for shipping rights of Muscat dhows, 1905, the Venezuelan boundary dispute, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Peabody Education Fund. |
