Scope and Content Note
The papers of Harold Raymond Wayne Benjamin (1893-1969) span the years 1908-1972 and contain family and general correspondence as well as literary manuscripts and miscellaneous material. The papers are organized into the following series: Family Correspondence , General Correspondence , Subject File , Literary Manuscripts , and Miscellany .
The Family Correspondence includes numerous letters written by Benjamin to his son, Harold Herbert Benjamin, 1945-1969, in which he discusses his work as a member of educational study missions to Japan, Afghanistan, Korea, and Latin America. The General Correspondence relates to his career and his achievements in the field of education. Approximately half of this series is made up of correspondence with the McGraw-Hill Book Company for which Benjamin served from 1936 as consulting editor in the field of education.
A small Subject File contains papers relating to Benjamin's work in higher education in Latin America and records of his military service. The Literary Manuscripts consist of speeches, articles, his doctoral thesis, poems, plays, and manuscripts of many of his books, including The Sage of Petaluma. The Miscellany series includes Benjamin's correspondence with Franklin Parker, certificates and awards, photographs, and a few printed items.
