Acquistion Information
The papers of George Dewey, naval officer, were deposited in the Library of Congress by his son, George G. Dewey, from 1933 to 1937 and were converted to a gift in 1952. Additional material was given to the Library in 1940 by J. O. Thorn and in 1963 by the estate of George G. Dewey. Further additions were transferred to the Library by the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, in 1990 and 1992.
Processing History
The Dewey Papers were processed in 1963 and revised and expanded in 1997. The finding aid was revised again in 2010.

The Manuscript Division also holds a separate collection of George Dewey papers as part of its Naval Historical Foundation Collection.
Transfers
Items have been transferred from the Manuscript Division to other custodial divisions of the Library. Maps and atlases have been transferred to the Geography and Map Division, where a finding aid to this material is available at https://hdl.loc.gov/loc.gmd/eadgmd.gm017003. Photographs have been transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division. All transfers are identified in these divisions as part of the George Dewey Papers.
