Scope and Content Note
The papers of Omar Nelson Bradley (1893-1981) span the years 1948-1953 and consist of addresses, statements, and articles by Bradley, May 30, 1948 through July 24, 1953, the period during which he was chief of staff of the United States Army (1948-1949), and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1949-1953). The documents are mainly in print or near print, with occasional carbon copies and photostats. Included are several commencement addresses, a number of statements before committees of the Senate and House of representatives on such subjects as the Career Compensation Act of 1949, the army budget, the North Atlantic Treaty, the Military Assistance Program, unification of the military services, continuation of the Selective Service Act and universal military training, the Korean War, the admission of Greece and Turkey to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the Mutual Security program. Included also are addresses before such organizations as the Association of Land-Grant Colleges and Universities, the Jewish War Veterans, and the National Press Club.
