Scope and Content Note
The papers of Wilbur Underwood (1876-1935) span the years 1895-1969, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1895-1935. The collection contains family and general correspondence, subject files, writings and poems, a notebook and journal, and miscellaneous printed and illustrative matter.
Subjects include genealogical material relating to the Bayard (Baird) family of Delaware and the Harrison family of Virginia. The collection contains typescripts concerning Florence Deakins Becker and Thomas Jefferson Murray; and papers of Underwood’s brother, Norman Underwood, including research material for his book Washington, D. C., Life of the Underwood Boys, 1878-1910, including a copy of the publication.
Correspondents include Rudulph Evans, Alexander Lattimore, H. L. Mencken, Thomas Bird Mosher, William Marion Reedy, Vincent Starrett, Vance Thompson, Claggett Wilson, and members of the Underwood family.
