Scope and Content Note
The papers of Ernest Harry Vestine (1906-1968) span the years 1932-1968 and consist of correspondence, reports, writings, printed matter, and miscellaneous material focusing on Vestine’s career as a physicist and his work on geomagnetics, seismology, and cosmic rays with the Carnegie Institution of Washington and the Rand Corporation. Much of the correspondence is international, including with scientists from the Soviet Union, England, Japan, and Australia on technical or organizational subjects. The collection contains meeting material, reports and writings relating to organizations and committees such as the World Magnetic Survey Board, the International Scientific Radio Union, the National Research Council (U.S.) Geophysics Research Board, and the National Research Council (U.S.) Committee for International Year of the Quiet Sun. A focus is on the International Years of the Quiet Sun, 1964-1965, and the International Geophysical Year, 1957-1958.
