Scope and Content Note
The papers of John Hill Wheeler (1806-1882) span the years 1825-1882, with the bulk of the material from 1852 to 1882. The collection is organized into two series. Series I consists of diaries; correspondence; manuscripts of the U.S. Treasury Department Yearbook, 1868, compiled by Wheeler; writings relating to Nicaragua and Wheeler’s service in that country; scrapbooks with an index; and other papers pertaining primarily to North Carolina history, social activities in Washington, D.C., politics, statistics, and the William Walker filibuster in Central America. Series II contains additional scrapbooks that were transferred to the papers from the general collections of the Library after the receipt of the original material in the Manuscript Division. The collection is arranged by type of material within the two series.
