Scope and Content Note
The West Florida Collection spans the years 1764-1848, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1764-1810. The collection consists of minutes, a letterbook, journals, claims, financial records, land records, and other documents pertaining largely to West Florida between its establishment by the British colonial government in 1763 out of land formerly controlled by the French and Spanish and its transfer to Spain in 1783. Included are minutes of the first Assembly of the Province of West Florida; minutes of the House and Council; records of commissioners; registers of petitions, warrants, and grants of land; and an account book of the Pensacola Secretary's Office.
Also in the collection is material relating to a rebellion of settlers in 1810 and the Republic of West Florida, as well as miscellaneous items subsequent to the region's annexation by the United States.
