Scope and Content Note
The papers of Theodore Francis Green (1867-1966) span the years 1924-1960, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1937-1960. The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, speeches, photographs, clippings, printed matter, and miscellaneous material organized into eleven series: Chronological File; Speech File; Trip File; McCarthy, Loyalty, and Security File; Green Silver Act and Northwest Atlantic Fisheries; Presidential File; United Nations File; Miscellany; Card Index File; Scrapbook; and Oversize.
The papers relate exclusively to Green's career and activities as a United States senator, including his committee assignments, particularly as a member and chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. The largest amount of material is in the Chronological File, which consists chiefly of constituent correspondence reflecting public reaction and opinion to legislation on foreign affairs and domestic issues, state and federal patronage, federal aid to Rhode Island, veterans, serviceman, applicants to the service academies, and the State Department. Among the topics in the Chronological File are agriculture, appropriations, the army, the Atomic Energy Commission, civil and defense mobilization, the Civil Service Commission, the Commission on Civil Rights, and the Democratic National Committee. Other topics featured in the collection are Democratic Party politics, the United Nations, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, communism, loyalty and security questions, fisheries treaties, and silver legislation during World War II. Also included are files relating to Joseph R. McCarthy and to Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
