Scope and Content Note
The papers of John Lowe (1838-1930), naval officer, span the years 1860-1945, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1870-1898. The material consists of private journals, orders to duty, a scrapbook, and miscellaneous material.
The private journals contain personal entries, entries pertaining to ships’ equipment, autograph letters, copies of letters, general orders, circulars, newspapers clippings, diagrams, photographs, and printed matter. Some of the journals have been edited by Lowe’s daughter, Edith Blinston Lowe. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, typescript copies of articles, holograph notes, and reprints of Lowe’s articles.
Among the correspondents in the journals are Daniel Ammen and Aniceto G. Menocal in the journal kept on the USS Despatch; Samuel Sullivan Cox, William H. Emory, and Edwin Thacher in the journal kept on the USS Dolphinand the USS Thetis; and Philip Hichbom in the journal kept on the USS New York. The journal kept on the submarine Hollandcontains copies of correspondence with John Davis Long.
