Scope and Content Note
The papers of Georg Martin Wunderlich (1883-1951) span the years 1897-1951 and consist of correspondence, diaries, notebooks, academic records, legal writings, financial papers, photos, memorabilia, clippings, printed matter, biographical data, military papers, and manuscripts of unpublished studies. The papers reflect Wunderlich’s legal education at Berlin, Leipzig, and Baden; his activities on behalf of clients in West Africa and elsewhere; his services to the German Imperial Government during World War I as judge and judge advocate in Belgium and Turkey; his postwar rise in Berlin to writer and authority on international law; his emigration in 1936 to the United States; his adjustment to the Anglo-American legal system; his teaching duties at the University of Pennsylvania; and his services during World War II as special counsel to the State Department. Included is correspondence concerning the American Society of International Law and the International Law Association.
