Scope and Content Note
The papers of Charles Warren (1868-1964) consist of correspondence, journals, memoranda, and clippings covering the period 1874-1954, with the bulk of the material from 1914 to 1945. The collection is organized by type of material.
Correspondence, memoranda, clippings, and journals from 1914-1918 relate to Warren’s tenure as assistant attorney general during World War I responsible for countering German espionage in the United States. Files titled “War Notes” include clippings and a chronological account of his own activities as well as those of other officials of the Woodrow Wilson administration in conducting the war.
Included are letters from Wilson administration officials such as Thomas Watt Gregory, Robert Lansing (1864-1928), Frank L. Polk, and Charles S. Hamlin, as well as members of the Supreme Court such as Oliver Wendell Holmes, Felix Frankfurter, William H. Taft, Louis Dembitz Brandeis, Benjamin N. Cardozo, and Charles Evans Hughes. Other correspondents are Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and John W. Davis.
