Scope and Content Note
The papers of Samuel Chiles Mitchell (1864-1948) consist of family and general correspondence; memoranda, reports, and records of administration of the Peabody Education Fund; speeches, articles, and lectures delivered by Mitchell; a poetry file; financial papers; news clippings; and printed matter by or about Mitchell.
The collection spans the years 1903-1913, with the bulk of the material from 1908 to 1913, during which time Mitchell was president of the University of South Carolina. The principal topics covered are education in the South, its support by the Peabody Education Fund, and disputes between Mitchell and Governor Coleman Livingston Blease of South Carolina.
Prominent correspondents include Charles Francis Adams, S. P. Brooke, J. J. Hall, Albert Bushnell Hart, Hamilton Holt, Walter Hines Page, George Foster Peabody, Sir Horace Curzon Plunkett, and George E. Rives.
