Scope and Content Note
The papers of Harvey Washington Wiley (1844-1930) span the years 1854-1954, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1860-1930. Included is correspondence, diaries, legal records, clippings, memoranda, printed matter, articles, speeches, lectures, essays, maps, blueprints, graphs, tables, memorabilia, and photographs. The papers relate to three major periods: Wiley's early years as student and teacher; his service as chief of the Bureau of Chemistry of the Department of Agriculture, 1883-1912, during which he led the movement that culminated in passage of the Food and Drugs Act of 1906; and his retirement years, during which he lectured on the Chautauqua circuit and directed the Good Housekeeping Institute Bureau of Food, Sanitation, and Health.
