Scope and Content Note
The papers of Oronzio Maldarelli (1892-1962) span the years 1931-1962 and consist of correspondence, clippings, press releases, articles, exhibition catalogs, photographs, sketches, designs, curriculum matter, and business papers relating to his career and commissions as a sculptor and educator. The collection is organized into General Correspondence , Sculpture File , and Miscellany series.
The General Correspondence treats the period he was a teacher at Sarah Lawrence College (1934-1937) and Columbia University (1937-1961) as well as a practicing sculptor. It relates to his life as a teacher, his work with directors of museums throughout the United States, and correspondence with artists such as Walker Hancock, Peppino Mangravite, and William Zorach. The Sculpture File contains correspondence, sketches, blueprints, financial records, and photographs concerning specific works executed by Maldarelli. Included in the Miscellany is biographical information, jewelry designs, and additional teaching material as well as photographs and printed matter.
