Scope and Content Note
The papers of James Thomas Ward (1820-1897) span the years 1838-1897 and consist of bound volumes of diaries, family and autobiographical material, notes and writings, and printed matter featuring Ward’s life and work as a circuit minister of the Methodist Protestant Church in Maryland and West Virginia, as pastor of the First Methodist Protestant Church in Philadelphia, as president of Western Maryland college from 1866 to 1886, and president of Westminster Theological Seminary (later Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.). Interspersed with clippings and pamphlets, the volumes include personal reflections and observations as well as recording events, travels, and important occasions.
