Scope and Content Note
The George M. Gould Collection of Hearniana spans the years 1877-1931 and consists of correspondence, writings, and other material by and about Lafcadio Hearn collected by Gould (1848-1922).
Included is correspondence by Hearn with Gould, Page M. Baker, James W. Bouton, and Rudolph Matas. Writings by Hearn consist of articles, short pieces, and translations. Also in the collection are articles about Hearn, typescripts of discussions between Gould and others relating to Hearn, and correspondence of Gould and his wife, Laura Stedman, with publishers, editors, friends, and critics concerning the relationship between Gould and Hearn and the publication of Gould's book, Concerning Lafcadio Hearn(1908). Other materials consist of reviews of books by and about Hearn, bibliographies of Hearn's works, and related material such as lectures, notes, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other papers pertaining to Hearn.
Gould's correspondents include Page M. Baker, Edward G. Clapham, Ferris Greenslet, Alexander Hill, Rudolph Matas, Mitchell McDonald, DeWitt Miller, Paul Elmer More, Jacques W. Redway, Edmund Clarence Stedman, and Andrew Dickson White.
