Scope and Content Note
The papers of Frederick Haynes Newell (1862-1932) span the years 1885-1931. The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, articles, subject files, and clippings relating primarily to Newell's service in the United States Reclamation Service and on the United States Public Lands Commission and the National Advisory Board for Fuels and Structural Materials. Included are personal and family materials and notes of his son, Roger S. Newell. The collection is organized into four series: Diaries , Letters Sent and Received , Newspaper Clippings , and Publications and Miscellany .
Among the principal correspondents are Frank D. Chase, Edward C. Finney, Glenn Frank, James Rudolph Garfield, Henry Solon Graves, Hermann Hagedorn, Robert Beecher Howell, William Walter Husband, Frederick P. Keppel, George H. Moses, George W. Norris, J. C. Penney, Gifford Pinchot, Charles Seymour, Albert Shaw, Ida M. Tarbell, and Riley Joseph Wilson.
An appendix to the finding aid provides subject terms for the filing system employed by Newell in a subseries of the Letters Sent and Received.
