Scope and Content Note
The collection of Waldemar Westergaard (1882-1963), a professor of Scandinavian and European history, spans the years 1558-1806. The papers consist of reproductions of selected materials in Danish, British, and American libraries and archives relating to the Danish West Indies and to northern European international relations from the sixteen through the eighteenth century. Transcribed items pertain chiefly to the Vestindisk-Guineiske kompagni (Danish West Indies-Guinea Company) and are copies of documents in the Rigsarkivet (Danish State Archives), Kongelige Bibliotek (Royal Library of Denmark), Raadstuearkivet (Municipal Archives) of Copenhagen, and the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. A microfilmed portion consists of reproductions of selected items from the Rigsarkivet and Public Record Office, London, with Denmark as the focal point, including documents relating to England, France, Russia, and Germany.
The collection is organized into two series: Danish West Indies (Transcripts) and Northern European International Relations (Microfilm).
