Scope and Content Note
The papers of Abel Wolman (1892-1989) span the years 1904-1975, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1930-1962. The collection consists of correspondence, maps, charts, blueprints, clippings, reports, studies, memoranda, and other professional papers relating to sanitary engineering and the management of water resources and the environment. The papers document his role in the development of public and private planning projects at the city, county, state, and national level and through public works in the United States and abroad. It includes material pertaining to Wolman's role as consultant and advisor to government agencies and public concerns in Baltimore, Md.; Detroit, Mich.; New York, N.Y.; São Paulo, Brazil; Washington, D.C.; and other cities as well as with private interests such as the Association of American Railroads and Bethlehem Steel Company. The collection also documents his work on water development in Israel, on behalf of the World Health Organization in Asia, and with the U.S. Agency for International Development in Brazil.
