Scope and Content Note
The papers of Cheryll Yvonne Greene (1943-2013) span the years 1969-1978, with the bulk of the material dating from 1969 to 1975. The papers are in English and are arranged by type of material. Greene served as the executive editor of Essence magazine, managing editor of SOULS, the journal of the Institute for Research in African American Studies (IRAAS) at Columbia University, and was involved in projects relating to African-American arts and history.
The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, photocopies of diary excerpts, manifestos, photocopies of a book draft, newspaper clippings, and other material relating chiefly to Greene providing possible editorial assistance to civil rights activist James Forman in writing his autobiography, The Making of Black Revolutionaries: A Personal Account. A letter from Forman to Greene, circa 1975, contains enclosures entitled "Executive Mandate Number 117" from the Revolutionary Action Party pertaining to techniques for the organization of the Black resistance movement. In this letter Forman asks Greene to distribute the enclosures.
