Scope and Content Note
The records of the United States Delegation to the 42nd Conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union span the years 1953-1954. Included in addition to the final report of the conference of in Washington, D.C., in 1953 is related correspondence, registration cards, printed matter, and other material. Founded in 1889, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is an association of the members and former members of the legislatures of the world with the main purpose of settling disputes through conciliation and arbitration. A brief history of the union compiled by the Library of Congress is included in the collection. Members of Congress were automatically members of an American Group within the organization that chose representatives for the conferences. Senator Homer Ferguson of Michigan was president of the United States Group at the 42nd conference.
