Scope and Content Note
The papers on the microfilm edition of the Western Range Cattle and Other industries Study Collection span the years 1823-1947, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1880-1920. The collection includes incorporation agreements, stockholder lists, journals, correspondence, maps, photographs, and printed matter relating to the cattle industry in Colorado, Kansas, Texas, and other areas and the Matador Land and Cattle Company, Swan Land and Cattle Company, and the Prairie Cattle Company. The microfilm is organized into two series: Cattle Industry Files and Mining and Other Business Files .
The majority of the material was reproduced from the originals in the Registrar of Companies Office in Edinburgh, Scotland. A reproduction of the index to companies register (1856-1920) from the Registrar of Companies in London, England, is found on Reel 22. Reels 23-28 contain material relating to the cattle industry reproduced from the Registrar of Companies Office in London. Reels 29-34 reproduce Moreton Frewen's Ranch Papers (1823-1932), the originals of which are in the Special Collections Division, University of North Dakota Library, Grand Forks, North Dakota. These papers supplement Frewen's personal papers in the Library of Congress and deal with his activities in conjunction with the Powder River Cattle Company in Johnson County, Wyoming.
Reels 35-75 contain material relating primarily to mining. This material, reproduced from originals in the files of the Registrar of Companies, Bush House, London, England, consists mainly of articles of agreement, stockholder lists, and summaries of capital and shares.
