Scope and Content Note
The records of the Russell Sage Foundation, founded by Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage in 1907 for the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States, span the years 1908-1942. The collection consists largely of source material on small loan organizations, credit unions, and other lending agencies, domestic and foreign, as well as on installment selling, industrial banking, and supervision of lending.
The collection is arranged as received by the Library, with the records organized by topic or type of financial institution. Main categories include small loan companies, credit unions, industrial banks, collection agencies, installment finance, consumer credit, employers' plans, usury, thrift, and service creditors.
