Biographical Note
James Orchard Halliwell, who assumed the name Halliwell-Phillipps through the family connections from his marriage to his first wife, Henrietta Phillipps, in 1872, was born in London and educated at Jesus College, Cambridge. An antiquarian and collector and researcher of English literature, he edited travel volumes, romances, nursery books and fairy tales, and other works, but was most notable for his scholarship and publications relating to the life and writings of William Shakespeare. He died January 3, 1889, and was buried in East Sussex.
