The Declaration of Independence Collection consisting of miscellaneous copies of documents, mostly photostats, relating to the creation of the Declaration of Independence and its Virginia antecedents was obtained through various acquisitions and institutional sources, including the New York Public Library, University of Virginia Library, Massachusetts Historical Society, and the Department of State.

The collection was compiled and described in 1978 and revised in 2015.
