Scope and Content Note
The papers of George Stanton Denison (1833-1866) span the years 1851-1884, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1851-1866. The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, drafts and printed copies of articles, and broadsides relating chiefly to Denison's life and work as a lawyer in San Antonio, Texas; collector of internal revenue in New Orleans, Louisiana, during the Civil War; and supervising special agent of the U.S. Department of the Treasury in Texas, 1865-1866. The collection includes correspondence with Salmon P. Chase. Also included is correspondence with family members in Vermont detailing northern views on social conditions in the South prior to the Civil War.
