Scope and Content Note
The papers of Edmund Burke (1809-1882) span the years 1821-1881. The collection consists of correspondence, drafts of newspaper editorials, speeches, committee reports, resolutions, commissions, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings pertaining to Burke's career as a newspaper editor in New Hampshire and as a congressman. The correspondence is chiefly incoming and relates primarily to the United States Patent Office and to the Dorr Rebellion in Rhode Island (1842). Included are numerous letters from Franklin Pierce. Other correspondents include James Buchanan, Lewis Cass, Nathan Clifford, Samuel Sullivan Cox, Daniel S. Dickinson, Thomas W. Dorr, John W. Forney, Henry Hubbard, James K. Polk, Thomas Ritchie, Gideon Welles, Fernando Wood, and Levi Woodbury.
