Scope and Content Note
The Susan Hertog Collection relating to Anne Morrow Lindbergh spans the years 1837 to 2008 with the bulk of the material from the years 1985-1999. The collection contains materials generated by Hertog during the research, writing, editing, and publication of Anne Morrow Lindbergh: Her Life. The collection is arranged into the following series: Correspondence, Interview Transcripts and Notes, Subject File, Anne Morrow Lindbergh: Her Life , and a Writings File.
The Correspondence includes received correspondence and copies and drafts of Hertog's sent correspondence. Significant correspondents include Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Reeve Lindbergh, other members of the extended Lindbergh family, Frances Apt, Sally Arteseros, Richard J. Bing, Raymond H. Fredette, Nigel Nicholson, Barbara H. Robbins, Ernestine Stodelle, Nan A. Talese, and Alden Whitman. The correspondence documents Hertog's efforts to interview Lindbergh, her family, and friends. In addition the collection documents the extent and completeness of Hertog's research and the editing process for the book.
Hertog conducted approximately ten interviews with Anne Morrow Lindbergh and the Interview Transcripts and Notes series contains transcripts and notes from eight of those interviews. The series also contains transcripts from Hertog's interviews with Elmer L. Andersen, Adrienne Arnett, Richard J. Bing, Joseph T. Durkin, Michael Heidelberger, Milton Howell, Reeve Lindbergh, James D. Newton, Samuel F. Pryor III, Katherine Alling Hollister Smith, Alden Whitman, and Margot Loines Morrow Wilkie. The Subject File contains correspondence, print materials, clippings, and unpublished manuscripts. Of particular note is unpublished correspondence from Elisabeth Morrow Morgan (Anne Morrow Lindbergh's sister) to Constance Chilton and correspondence collected by Robert J. Bing.
The material in the Anne Morrow Lindbergh: Her Life file includes chapter drafts, book drafts, proofs, permissions, photographs, proposals, and publicity materials. The Writings File includes articles and course work from programs at Barnard College and Columbia University.
