Scope and Content Note
The papers of Clarence E. Mulford (1883-1956) span the years 1921-1936 and consist mainly of drafts of novels and short stories by Mulford, including an extensive card file of notes on Western life in the nineteenth century. Born in Streator, Illinois, February 3, 1883, Mulford was creator of the fictional cowboy “Hopalong Cassidy,” whose character was later portrayed in radio, television, and the movies. As reflected in the papers, he also produced other work relating to the settlement of the West, to overland trails, cattle drives, Indians, trapping for fur, and military outposts from the Plains to the Far West. Mulford died in Portland, Maine, May 10, 1956.
