Scope and Content Note
The Civil War collection of Newton Allen Strait (1846-1922) spans the years 1861-1900, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the period 1861-1865. The material consists of Union regimental records compiled by Strait in the late nineteenth century from records of the U.S. Adjutant General's Office of twenty-three states and the District of Columbia and from diaries and correspondence of soldiers. Also included is regimental information relating to U.S. Colored Troops. The collection is most extensive for the regiments of New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.
Born in Pennsylvania, Strait compiled other data relating to the Civil War, including, with John Wesley Wells, An Alphabetical List of the Battles of the War of the Rebellion, with Dates(Washington, D.C.: Gibson Brothers, printers, 1875), and Roster of All Regimental Surgeons and Assistant Surgeons in the Late War with Their Service, and Last-Known Post-Office Address Compiled from Official Records by N. A. Strait([Washington?], 1882). A List of Soldiers Homes, produced by the Pension Bureau, 1920, is also attributed to Strait.
