Scope and Content Note
The Sid Yudain Papers span the years 1934 to 2014, with the bulk of the material dating between 1946 and 2003. The collection focuses on Yudain’s personal and professional life, prominently featuring his role as publisher and editor of Roll Call, a newspaper he founded in 1955 to cover the United States congressional community, focusing mostly on social life on Capitol Hill. The papers are in English. The collection is organized into five series: Personal File, Correspondence, Roll Call Files, Speeches and Writings, and Oversize.
As received, the collection consisted mostly of loose items, so an arrangement was imposed for convenience of description and access. Furthermore, the files are not comprehensive and tend to focus only on individual documents retained by Yudain. As a result, some files feature only a few items on a particular topic or, in the case of more cohesive groupings of documents, contain gaps within the material. Although there is a Roll Call Files series, Yudain played such a significant role in the newspaper that his involvement is reflected throughout all series in the collection.
The collection’s series are listed and briefly described below. A fuller description of each series and a list of its contents can be accessed in the series descriptions within the container list.
The Personal File series, 1934-2014, mostly documents Yudain’s life outside of his career as the editor and publisher of Roll Call.
The Correspondence series, 1936-2012, documents Yudain’s activities through incoming and outgoing letters with friends, family, colleagues, and United States presidents, senators, and representatives.
The Roll Call Files series, 1951-2011, documents various aspects of the newspaper’s history through items personally collected by Yudain.
The Speeches and Writings series, 1946-2013, contains articles, editorials, and speeches written by Yudain, mostly pertaining to his career as editor of Roll Call and as a freelance journalist in Hollywood, California in the late 1940s.
The remaining series contains Oversize material
