Acquisition Information
The papers of Rita R. Colwell were given to the Library of Congress by Colwell in 2007. Numerous additions were given by her between 2007 and 2013.
Processing History
The papers of Rita R. Colwell were arranged and described by Nate Scheible with the assistance of Jake Bozza, Andrea Briggs, Kimberly Owens, Annette Scherber, Emilia Schrier, and Tammi Taylor in 2020.
Digital files were received as part of the Rita R. Colwell Papers on a variety of storage media, each of which was assigned a unique digital ID number. Use the digital ID number to request access copies of the files associated with each media. Transfers
Items have been transferred from the Manuscript Division to other custodial divisions of the Library. Audiotapes have been transferred to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division and comprise recordings of conferences, lectures, and workshops. Some scientific reports, conference proceedings, and books have been transferred to the Science, Technology, and Business Division. Two maps have been transferred to the Geography and Map Division. All transfers are identified in these divisions as part of the Rita R. Colwell Papers. Patrons are encouraged to contact these divisions in advance of a research visit.

Technical Requirements
Digital files were mostly created in a Windows operating system, version unknown. The content is primarily text files in .doc, .pdf, and .xls formats; presentation files in .ppt format; web page files in .htm format; image files in .jpg and .gif formats; and video files in .mpg and .mov formats. Many legacy textual formats can be viewed with a file viewer tool. Digital ID mss85361_197_025 contains files in shapefile formats that require the use of an ESRI shapefile browser.
