Scope and Content Note
The papers of Charles M. Goodman (1906-1992) span the years 1932 to 2003. The collection documents Goodman's midcentury career as an architect, primarily in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The papers are in English and are arranged alphabetically by subject or type of material.
The collection consists primarily of project and office files from his firm, Charles M. Goodman Associates, professional correspondence, consulting material, and publications. Prominent projects represented in the collection include: Bolling Air Force Base officer's club, Washington, D.C.; Hollin Hills neighborhood, Alexandria, Va.; consulting work for the National Homes Corporation; the National Machine Tool Builders' Association headquarters, McLean, Va.; River Park cooperative, southwest Washington, D.C.; the development of Reston, Va.; and Westgate and Westpark research parks, McLean, Va. There are also materials related to a number of private residences Goodman designed or renovated in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, including an addition to his own home in Alexandria, Va. The collection documents his involvement in professional organizations, particularly the American Institute of Architects and the alumni association of the Illinois Institute of Technology. Other materials include awards, brochures, clippings, magazines, professional publications, correspondence, financial documents, speeches and writings, and various subject files. The collection contains a small number of blueprints and illustrated designs, chiefly for prefabricated volumnar sectional units. Very little personal material is in the collection.
