The papers of Charles Eames (1907-1978), architect and designer, and Ray Eames (1912-1988), artist and designer, were given to the Library of Congress by Ray Eames in 1988. Additional material from her gift was received between 2002 and 2013.
Processing History
The papers were arranged and described by Margaret H. McAleer with the assistance of Thelma Follette, Lisa Madison, Sharon Ann McCarthy, and Robert A. Vietrogoski in 1994. Additional material was incorporated into the collection as Part II by Margaret McAleer and Tracey Barton with the assistance of Thomas Bigley, Jeffrey Bryson, Chanté Flowers, Chelsea Jacks, Brian McGuire, Jaime Mears, Samantha Norling, Carolyn Ray, Morgan Sawicki, Tammi Taylor, and Hillary Zulliand, and the finding aid was revised in 2013.
Transfers
The papers of Charles and Ray Eames are part of the larger collection entitled the Work of Charles and Ray Eames which is housed in four divisions of the Library. The Prints and Photographs Division holds an extensive collection of photographs, sketches, drawings, and plans relating to the Eameses' furniture designs, architectural projects, exhibits, and films. A finding aid describes their Slide Photograph series. Films and sound recordings produced by the Eames Office are located in the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division. Two musical scores were transferred to the Music Division where they are identified as part of these papers.
