Explanation of Code System for Photographs in the Victor Kraft Materials
The negatives have been coded two ways: (1) previously-given identifying codes or (2) job numbers were maintained and conjoined with the prefix CC-VKM-N ( C opland C ollection - V ictor K raft M aterial - N egative). The negatives which did not have identifying codes or job numbers were assigned new codes with the prefix CC-VKM-N- followed by X- and an Arabic numeral, and arranged in ascending order. Any original information regarding the subjects of negatives has been transcribed onto the negative sleeves. Other codes are marked on the back of the photoprints when a corresponding negative has been identified.
Kraft had arranged the negatives in four negative books (CC-VKM-NI-# to CC-VKM-NIV-#) with glassine sleeves. These negatives have been rehoused in acid-free sleeves and numerically and sequentially coded according to Kraft's arrangement. The original arrangement has been preserved as closely as possible. The roman numeral in the code signifies in which negative book the negative had been stored.
Arrangement codes for negatives
- Original codes and all identifying information are transcribed from original wrapper or negative strips.
- Assigned codes, designated by an "X" following the "N" in the code, are those created by the LC processor when no original code was present.
- Negatives are arranged in progressive numerical order.
- Numerical codes precede letter codes and original codes precede assigned codes in storage arrangement.
- All color negatives and transparencies are coded, arranged and stored separately.
