Scope and Content Note
Tommy Newsom Arrangements contain dance band, symphonic orchestra, and small ensemble musical arrangements for 267 works. These include manuscripts, printed copies, and photocopies for both full scores and orchestral parts. While the collection spans Newsom's fifty-year career, from 1947 dance band arrangements to pieces for trumpeter Doc Severinsen's recordings in 1999, most of the music dates from his thirty-year stint on the Tonight Show. Many of the selections were arranged for featured performers, such as vocalists Vic Damone, Crystal Gayle, Patti Page, Paul Anka, Joe Williams, Glen Campbell, and Diahann Carroll; trumpeter Doc Severinsen; drummers Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, and Duffy Jackson; trombonist Urbie Green; saxophonist Boots Randolph; and Newsom on tenor sax. A few arrangements in the collection are not by Newsom and are credited accordingly.
