Biographical Note
Lieutenant-General Alexander George Fraser, 16th Lord Saltoun, was born April 22, 1785, in London. He was a Scottish representative peer and a British Army general who fought in the Napoleonic Wars and the First Opium War. A musical enthusiast, amateur musician, and patron of the arts, Lord Saltoun sponsored the activities of the Società Lirica, which was a group of amateur musicians who performed in private venues. Organized by concert manager and critic John Ella, the society's first chamber music concert was held in Lord Saltoun's house in 1826. At the time of his death, Lord Saltoun was president of the Madrigal Society of London and chairman of the Musical Union. He died on August 18, 1853, in Rothes, Scotland.
