Scope and Content Note
Letters comprise most of this collection. A 1949 letter from Erick Hawkins to Sallie Wagner initiated a brief correspondence between Wagner and Martha Graham. Hawkins (and his wife-collaborator) continued to be in touch with Wagner and her spouse intermittently for about four decades thereafter. The letters contain personal reflections and news, as well as details of their art projects, critical responses, and travels. Some letters mention enclosures of reviews or programs, but those items did not convey with the collection. A typed copy of a poem by e. e. cummings, mentioned in one of the letters of Hawkins, is included in the collection. Copies of three typed essays (authored by Dlugoszewski, Hawkins, and Robert Motherwell, the latter who introduced honoree Hawkins at the 1979 Dance Magazine award event), are included in the collection; these may have been enclosures with letters to Wagner. Also available are two informal snapshots of Hawkins.
