Biographical Note
George H. Moss was born on March 2, 1923, in New York City. He was a graduate of the Horace Mann School in New York and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and he was honorably discharged in 1946. He then worked at the New York Stock Exchange. After retiring in 1971, Moss pursued his interest in preserving the history of Monmouth County, New Jersey. For his work, he received the Award of Recognition from the New Jersey Historical Commission in 1983, the Jane G. Clayton Award from Monmouth County in 1997, and the Richard J. Hughes Award from the New Jersey Historical Commission in 1998. In 1999, Moss was appointed the official Monmouth County Historian and Rumson Borough Historian. In addition to his formal activities as a historian, Moss also developed a personal collection of materials related to the history of Monmouth County, as well as 5,000 glass plate negatives of New York and Long Branch, New Jersey. He authored numerous books and articles and had interests in geneology, photography, and early American Theater. Moss died on February 25, 2009.
