Scope and Content Note
The Arnold Schoenberg Correspondence and Other Papers spans the years 1894 to 1959, with the majority dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. The collection largely consists of Schoenberg’s professional and personal Correspondence with notable musical figures, organizations, and family members. The Correspondence from Schoenberg subseries encompasses letters that Schoenberg wrote to composers, conductors, organizations, and family members. The Correspondence to Schoenberg and His Estate subseries contains letters that composers, conductors, organizations, and family members wrote to Arnold Schoenberg and those responsible for his estate. These two subseries include a significant amount of correspondence with Schoenberg's teacher, Alexander Zemlinsky, and his students Alban Berg and Anton Webern. The Clippings and Miscellany series contains clippings, many of which document the premieres for Pierrot Lunaire in 1912 and Gurre-Lieder in 1913, as well as programs, photographs, receipts and other papers.
