Scope and Content Note
The Erick Hawkins and Lucia Dlugoszewski Papers contain materials pertaining to both Hawkins's and Dlugoszewski's lives and careers, as well as to the Erick Hawkins Dance Company and Foundation. The collection spans from 1878 to 2000, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1940s to the 1990s. Containers 1-227 include materials from the initial 2001-2002 gifts; materials in containers 228-460, which were in the possession of Dlugoszewski at her death, arrived in 2019.
The Journals and Notebooks series contains information regarding Hawkins's life as well as choreographic notebooks documenting many dances he created. These include movement sketches, scenarios, and other choreographic notes. Notebooks and diaries by Dlugoszewski contain compositional, aesthetic, choreographic, and structural notes for many of her works, as well as a small amount of personal journals and reflections.
The Music series includes holograph scores and sketches, printed scores, and reproductions of works by Dlugoszewski and other composers. Choreographic notes, cues, and music annotations may be found within some scores. Scores in Hawkins's and Dlugoszewski's personal music libraries do not appear to be choreographed, but do contain some annotations.
The Writings chiefly consist of essays, articles, lecture notes, program notes, book chapters, and other writings by Hawkins and Dlugoszewski. The series also includes writings that others wrote about them and the Hawkins Dance Company, such as interviews, articles, and reviews.
Letters to and from the families of Hawkins and Dlugoszewski, as well as other personal and professional correspondence, comprise the Correspondence. Martha Graham, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Alan Hovhaness, and Roger Stevens are among the many notable correspondents.
The Photographs series contains images of Hawkins's choreography as well as that of other choreographers. There are also photographs of people and events related to their careers, and personal photographs that include family and friends. Formats range from photographs and contact sheets to negatives and slides.
Programs and Promotional Materials pertain to Hawkins and Dlugoszewski as well as to other performers and choreographers. The materials encompass programs, flyers, posters, and other promotional items. Drafts of promotional materials for the Hawkins Dance Company are located in the Foundation Papers. The Writings by Dlugoszewski subseries includes ideas and drafts for program notes for performances of her music as well as those of the dance company.
The Foundation Papers contain materials pertaining to the governance and operation of the Erick Hawkins Dance Foundation and its previous iterations. Agendas, minutes, financial documents, files relating to the production and creation of performances and various projects, studio school materials, and other administrative documents are included.
The Clippings and Scrapbooks that Hawkins, Dlugoszewski, and Dlugoszewski's family assembled document their lives and activities.
The Personal Papers include items pertaining to Hawkins's life, such as awards, school materials, financial records, and estate documents. The series also contains Dlugoszewski's music business papers, works lists, and other personal documents, as well as materials from her family.
Objects pertaining to Dlugoszewski's instruments and other items comprise the Realia series.
