Scope and Content Note
The Alan Hovhaness Music Manuscripts chiefly contain manuscript scores, parts, and sketches created by Hovhaness between 1939 and 1969. The works largely represent the middle of his compositional career beginning in the mid-1940s and serve as examples of his unique stylistic development and use of extended melodic themes and Asian instrumentation in his works. Several notable compositions in the collection include Symphony no. 2, Mysterious Mountain; Symphony no. 8, Arjuna; Meditation on Orpheus; Cantata, op. 182, Fuji; and Lousadzak.
