Organizational History Note
Author, entertainer, and radio personality Garrison Keillor established American Radio Company (formally American Radio Company of the Air) in 1989. Broadcast live from the Opera House of the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City, the program utilized theatrical sketches and musical performances similar to A Prairie Home Companion, but designed for a more urban audience. It premiered on November 25, 1989, and ran for four seasons. Guest artists included Tito Puente, Peter Schickele, the Dixie Chicks, Robin and Linda Williams, and many others. In 1992, Keillor brought the program back to Minnesota Public Radio and subsequently reverted its name to A Prairie Home Companion on October 3, 1993.
