Scope and Content Note
The Charles Zachary Bornstein Papers span from 1953 to 2020, the bulk of which date from 1968 to 1999. The materials primarily consist of scores for original compositions by Bornstein, as well as arrangements and transcriptions of works by other composers. The music materials are indicative of his career as an avant garde composer and his efforts to orchestrate and transcribe works of other influential composers, namely Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, and Iannis Xenakis. The correspondence and photographs illustrate the range of Bornstein's composing and conducting career and his professional and personal relationships.
