Scope and Content Note
The Anne Hull Papers span from 1894 to 1981. The materials primarily pertain to Hull's musical career: her compositions, musical writings, programs and other ephemera from her own performances and those of her students, and pedagogy.
The Music series includes scores, parts, and sketches of Hull's compositions, as well as works by others, some of which she arranged. Most of her works are for piano solo, piano with voice, or piano with chamber ensemble. Her arrangements include those of Bach, Beethoven, and traditional folksongs.
In the Writings series are works by Hull and others. Materials include scholarly music research by Hull as well as Ernest Hutcheson and Colin McPhee. Also included are her fiction writings and memoirs.
There is both professional and personal Correspondence to and from Hull. Correspondents are primarily members of her musical circle, including Mary Howe, Ernest Hutcheson, Colin McPhee, and John Jacob Niles. Also of note are letters from Marvin Hamlisch, a former pupil of Hull's.
The Photographs series contains mostly staged photographs and publicity shots of Hull and other musicians such as Mary Howe, Amy Beach, and Paul Wells.
The Programs and Promotional Material series includes ephemera for performances by Hull and those she attended, particularly those of her students. Many reviews are clippings; other clippings are located in the Subject Files series, which also contains various written materials, mailings, and items pertaining to Hull's life and teaching career.
