Scope and Content Note
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Collection spans from 1910 to 2024, the bulk of which dates from 1950 to 2005. The collection covers the life and career of choreographer, teacher, and dancer Alvin Ailey (1931-1989), along with the creation and operation of his modern dance company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT). The collection's notes, costume designs, music, correspondence, administrative records, schedules, photographs, programs, posters, and scrapbooks document Ailey and AAADT's creative processes, performing career, and training and education efforts.
The Creative Output and Process series documents the creation and performance of dances for AAADT and Ailey II through materials such as costume designs, casting information, music, Ailey's creative notes, writings, documents regarding AAADT's 1971-1979 City Center residency and television and film performances, and miscellaneous creative notes and music. The Subject Files series contains information about the artists, travel, and inspirational topics that contributed to the formation and growth of AAADT. The Correspondence contains letters to or by AAADT staff relating to the function and activities of the company, as well as letters to Ailey. The Administrative Records were generated by AAADT staff, the Board of Directors, and Executive Committee and relate to the operation and funding of the company. The Training, Education, and Touring series documents the company's commitment to the growth of dance education through its training programs, certifications, and performances throughout the world.
The Promotional Materials series contains publicity items such as press kits, press releases, and posters. The Photographs series includes images of AAADT and Ailey II, as well as publicity photographs of individuals and groups in the company. Scrapbooks and Clippings contain publicity items and historical materials documenting the activities of AAADT and Ailey II, and the Programs series documents early shows Ailey danced in or choreographed, as well as AAADT and Ailey II's numerous performances. The Awards series represents a sample of the numerous honors and recognitions bestowed on Ailey and the company. Lastly, the Artwork includes visual interpretations of Ailey and other dancers by various artists.
