Scope and Content Note
The Newman I. White Papers span from 1812 to 1928 with the bulk of the items dating between 1915 and 1928. They document White's research and writing of American Negro Folk Songs (1928). Included is correspondence with folklorists, his publisher, libraries, and rights holder; folklore field collection sheets from students and friends concerning Black song lyrics; and research materials concerning Black life. There are also a number of pro-slavery publications.
Note that folder titles are largely transcriptions of those that White provided. Folders are arranged alphabetically within each series; each is assigned a "White folder no." that identifies the original folder number.
