Scope and Content Note
Selections from Burk Uzzle's collection represent over 300 photo assignments for print media and corporate clients as well as some personal work. The photographs are primarily black & white, with color work for a few (two?) assignments. Subject coverage depicted is broad, with emphasis on places, people and events in the United States. The range of topics include a Wyoming rancher (1960); segregation in McComb, Mississippi (1961); Cuban refugees in Miami, Florida (1962); the automobile industry, Detroit (1962); Haiti (1963 and 1975); teenagers in Cleveland (1965); bullfighting in Spain (1969); Enduro motorcycle racing (1975); refugee camps in Cambodia and Thailand (1979-1980) and many more. Personalities depicted include Thomas Hart Benton, Judge Joe Bean, Jackie Gleason, astronaut John Glenn, Hubert Humphrey, and Andrew Wyeth. Several assignments show images from the funerals of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. Uzzle's clients include Life magazine (Time, inc.), Magnum Photos, the New York City Planning Commission, the United States Information Agency, among others.
Contextual information for photographic assignments is limited. Overall "story titles" supplied by Uzzle serve as the only caption information for image groups.
All physical formats (i.e., contact sheets, prints and/or negatives) associated with each Job are listed in the contents list. Most images have both a contact sheet and coordinating negative, unless otherwise noted. The images are black & white unless "color" is noted. Most files also include associated housings or other documentation showing original Job (or story) titles and assignment numbers.
Material available for reference service include contact sheets and any associated documents, including housings, showing original story titles, clients, dates and assignment numbers. Negatives are not available for ready reference service. All prints are marked with corresponding negative numbers.
