Arrangement
The arrangement of works created by Alfred Bendiner reflects groupings established by Mrs. Bendiner and Bendiner curator Margaret Yarnell after Alfred Bendiner's death in 1964. The Library of Congress used these groupings to place the works into 22 LOTs. For the most part, LOT divisions follow categories created by his wife Elizabeth, after his death in 1964. These categories were either thematic (e. g. sports) or geographical (e. g. Italy). A few items were moved to different categories when better identifications were uncovered, but most items remain as she identified them. In a few cases, multiple categories were combined into one LOT (e.g. England and Ireland).
The works by other artists collected by Alfred Bendiner are sorted into another 10 LOTs by form and genre. Works of an exceptional nature that merited fuller item-level description were placed in several curatorial filing series.
For Lotted material, some of the sorting was subjective because an item can fit the subject of more than one LOT. Researchers may need to consult a number of LOTs to find images related to their topic of interest. All LOTs have been organized by size; some LOTs are then further organized by subject. Because the size distinctions aren't always self-evident, researchers should consult the entire LOT to find all the images for a given subject.
In the item level checklists for each of the LOTs many of the captions were devised by Library of Congress staff. These devised captions are always bracketed "[ ]." When works appeared to be made as a quick reference or as a preliminary study, the devised caption frequently begins with the phrase "Sketch of." Many of the items in the collection have drawings on both sides of the sheet. There are item level descriptions for both the recto and the verso in the item level checklist. Because the collection has been processed into both LOTs and a number of filing series, catalog records for items in the collection may be found in a number of catalogs including our Online Catalog and card files in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room.
